Quick Recovery Equals Happy Feet

Keyhole surgery, also known as minimally invasive or arthroscopic surgery, involves making small incisions through which specialized instruments are inserted to perform precise surgical procedures. This approach contrasts with traditional open surgery, which requires larger incisions and often entails longer recovery times.

Applications in Podiatry

Podiatric keyhole surgery has revolutionized the treatment of numerous foot conditions, including:

  1. Bunions (Hallux Valgus): Bunions are bony bumps that form at the base of the big toe, causing it to deviate towards the other toes. Keyhole surgery for bunions involves realigning the bones of the big toe and removing the bony prominence through small incisions. This minimally invasive approach results in less tissue damage, reduced pain, and quicker recovery compared to traditional bunion surgery.
  2. Hammer Toe: Hammer toe is a deformity where one or more toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, resembling a hammer. Keyhole surgery for hammer toe correction addresses the underlying issues such as tight ligaments or tendons, restoring normal alignment and function to the affected toes. Patients typically experience less postoperative pain and can return to regular activities sooner.
  3. Plantar Fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain, characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that supports the arch of the foot. Minimally invasive plantar fascia release offers targeted relief by releasing tension in the affected tissue, promoting healing and reducing discomfort.
  4. Morton's Neuroma: Morton's neuroma is a painful condition caused by the thickening of the tissue around the nerves leading to the toes. Keyhole surgery can effectively remove the enlarged nerve or release pressure on the affected nerve, providing long-term relief from neuroma-related pain and discomfort.

Benefits of Podiatric Keyhole Surgery

Patients will see multiple advantages from this new surgical procedure including:

  • Ability to walk immediately and a much faster return to regular shoes in 6-8 weeks,
  • An aesthetically appealing option since the incision is small with minimal to no scarring,
  • Minimal swelling,
  • Generally less pain, and
  • A procedure equally effective for teenagers as it is for individuals well into their 80s!

Newport’s own Dr. V offers Keyhole Surgery

Dr. Vinogradov is proud to offer this effective and medically advanced procedure. "This allows patients to no longer have to stay off their foot for 2-3 months while healing but allows them to walk the same day!” he excitedly said. “It also minimizes the incision to something as small as ½ inch. This procedure is so advantageous to patients but is not offered by many doctors as they aren’t trained in it. If patients are desiring to have this procedure done, their options are my services at Premier Medical or seeking one of the couple of doctors in Knoxville who do very few of these surgeries with this technique."

Board qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Vinogradov specializes in deformity correction, revision surgeries, and diabetic limb salvage. He served in the United States Army for 14 years as a combat engineer and infantryman before pursuing his career in podiatry. He then attended medical school at Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami, Florida and afterward completed residency in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with a focus on limb salvage at a level 1 trauma center. His passion lies in helping his patients regain their quality of life by getting them back on their feet.
