DON’T LET ANOTHER YEAR PASS

As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. We see the pink ribbons everywhere and many sports teams even wear pink this month to draw awareness.

IMPORTANCE OF AWARENESS

Breast cancer affects many women. As many as 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The awareness is especially important this year. With the covid-19 pandemic, many people have skipped important doctors appointments over the last year. Some offices have had to delay scheduling certain procedures. This means there was a setback in screenings and early detection.

EARLY DETECTION

Finding breast cancer early helps prevent death. A mammogram screening helps detect abnormal cells that may be cancerous. Early detection allows cancer to be discovered before symptoms can often even be felt. When cancer is discovered early, before it has spread, it is often quite treatable.

According to the American Cancer Society, the following mammogram scheduling is recommended:

  • Women aged 40-44 have the option for annual screenings.
  • Women aged 45-54 should have screenings each year.
  • Women 55+ have the option to switch to screenings every other year.

In addition to mammograms, women should also conduct monthly self exams. Changes in shape, texture of the skin, and color should be watched and brought to the attention of a doctor.
